A student who played soccer at Oral Roberts University was killed during a fiery crash Thursday in south Tulsa and the driiver who caused the accident may be facing charges.
Eugene Quaynor of Ghana was pronounced dead at the scene after the 10:20 p.m. collision at 71st Street and Yale Avenue, according to the Tulsa Police Department. With the help of the school, police were able to notify his family about the accident
Police responded to the scene after receiving several calls about a car engulfed in flames with a person trapped in the vehicle.
Tulsa police said when officers arrived the driver of the SUV who caused the crash had attempted to flee, but EMSA paramedics held him on the scene until police could get there.
After the initial investigation, police determined the male driver of the SUV rear-ended the silver Nissan at the stop light, hitting it hard enough to push the car through the intersection.
The Nissan spun around and hit a retaining wall on the southeast corner, then caught fire.
A few bystanders tried to help the driver of the Nissan get out — even using bricks from the retaining wall to break the windows — but they were unable to help further due to the large fire.
The driver of the SUV who caused the accident, who was not named by police, was taken to the hospital. He was unsteady on his feet, unable to walk, and appeared to be severely intoxicated, they said. No one else was in the SUV with him.
After a thorough investigation and toxicology report, charges against the driver who caused the crash will be recommended to the Tulsa County District Attorney's office, Tulsa police said.
