Two women were killed late Thursday in a head-on collision on the Creek Turnpike in Broken Arrow, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

The accident happened at about 10:18 p.m. near the Olive Avenue exit. OHP said Carigan Elisabeth Kelley Rains, 22, of Broken Arrow was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes when her Hyundai Elentra collided with a Chevrolet Equinox driven by 49-year-old Reyna Reyes Larios of Coweta.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene by the Broken Arrow Fire Department due to multiple injuries. They were both pinned in their vehicles for more than an hour.

OHP will be investigating the accident further to determine the cause and condition of the drivers when the crash occurred. Both were wearing their seatbelts.

This story needs to be followed up with the OHP investigation results. Hopefully the community can learn the toxicology involved, where did the wrong-way driver enter the turnpike, how did law enforcement react to the multiple 911 calls that were reported prior to the crash, what possible mitigations might be pursued by authorities to address wrong-way drivers and if the wrong-way driver was under the influence of intoxicants, did a restaurant over-serve this person or did this person attend an event or was with others prior to getting in the car.
