Three people were killed and a child was critically injured Monday morning after a man opened fire on them in a Tulsa apartment.
Caleb Venson is facing 3 counts of 1-degree murder, 1 count of shooting with intent to kill and 1 count of first-degree burglary in connection with the 6:30 a.m. incident at the Wood Creek Apartments on Tulsa’s east side.
Killed in the attack were Ashley Atwell, 38, Annaway Mackey, 20, and Sarah Gonzalez.
Tulsa police believe Venson gained access to the apartment by shooting out a glass door, then shot the three women – including his ex-girlfriend, who was holding his infant baby at the time and was also shot. Venson also shot and killed the other women in the apartment, police said.
A 13-year-old boy in the apartment hid in the back bedroom when he heard gunshots. Police said Venson forced the boy out of his bedroom but was then “very remorseful of his actions.” The boy escaped the apartment through a window and called for help.
Police arrived to find the three women dead, and the infant lying on the ground next to one of the women. An officer grabbed the baby, ran out of the apartment and handed the baby off to a firefighter for medical attention.
The infant made it out of surgery and is expected to survive. Venson turned himself in to police shortly before 8 a.m.
