Local Scouts Complete National Youth Leadership Training

Scouts from Troop 990 Recently completed National Youth Leadership Training and have returned home to put the skills they have acquired to good use in their community, family, and Troop.

Having recently achieved First Class Rank, making her eligible to attend, Keturah Warden graduated on July 1, 2023, after 6 days of training, challenges, and activities that were undertaken together with other youth involved in Scouting from other units from several councils.

National Youth Leadership Training, commonly referred to as NYLT, is an intense 6-day program designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in every area of their life demanding leadership of self and others. NYLT is one the courses in the Boy Scouts of America’s Youth Leadership Training Continuum that begins with formal leadership training within their local unit and progresses to advanced courses that are held throughout the US. All of the courses support the Boy Scouts of America’s mission to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what a leader must KNOW, and what a leader must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. Youth return equipped with knowledge, skills, and character that benefit them in every area of their life and helps them be prepared for the rest of their life. It also helps them bring the best out of themselves and others and create a supportive environment where people are able to learn and grow as individuals and teams. Youth also return with new friendships that have developed while working in teams together the entire course.

Upon completion of NYLT, youth are eligible to attend National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM for their next step in leadership development. Subsequent courses available to youth in Scouting are eligible for college credit.

Troop 990’s current Senior Patrol Leader, Adelaide Warden, attended NAYLE in July 2023. Keturah Warden has been appointed to be the Troop’s Assistant Senior Patrol Leader beginning in August 2023 and plans to attend NAYLE in 2024 to further her personal development as a person, citizen, and leader.

Troop 990 is planning to send several new First Class Scouts to NYLT in Summer of 2024.

Scouts BSA Troop 990 (Girls) and Scouts BSA Boys Troop 513 (Boys) meets on Sundays at 3:30 PM at St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Broken Arrow (third weekend of the month the Troops are typically on outings. Call in advance to confirm). The Troops meet concurrently, but separately, to facilitate involvement of youth that have a sister/brother that is also involved in Scouting. Both Troops are chartered by Youth Leadership Development Foundation, a local 501(c)(3) committed to the development of leadership, character, citizenship, and personal fitness for a lifetime in the youth of our community through the Scouting program.
